Leeds send 3-word tweet about Phillips during Euro 2020 win

Leeds United midfielder Kalvin Phillips helped England to victory over Croatia in their opening Euro 2020 clash this afternoon.

Gareth Southgate’s side secured a 1-0 victory at Wembley to kick off their campaign with a win.

Raheem Sterling was the match winner after scoring in the second half.

But it was a pass from the Leeds product which set up the Manchester City attacker.

Phillips had a brilliant first season in the Premier League with the Elland Road club and more than proved he was ready for this level.

And now he’s just done the same on an even bigger stage.

Attacker?

Phillips played in a slightly more attacking way than Marcelo Bielsa uses him in West Yorkshire.

The 24-year-old is effectively a defensive-minded midfielder at club level for Leeds.

But he got forward a lot more regularly against the Croats this afternoon, sort of evoking memories of how former Whites boss Thomas Christiansen utilised him.

Still, it just goes to show that whatever the midfield role, Phillips can adapt and that is the mark of a quality footballer.
