Victor Orta probably isn’t enjoying this World Cup.
Yes, some of his Leeds United players are shining, but it seems as though almost every day a former Leeds transfer target is shining in Qatar.
Cody Gakpo was almost signed by the Whites in the summer, and now he’s leading the Golden Boot race. Bamba Dieng was a deadline day target, and he’s just scored the goal to send Senegal through the group stages, while Mohammed Kudus is also shining on the biggest stage after being linked to Leeds.
It’s already been reported that Leeds have now missed their chance to sign Gakpo after his incredible start to the season and brilliant World Cup campaign, and, in our view, the same must apply to Kudus.

Indeed, with Arsenal and Liverpool now sniffing around the Ghanaian star, it’s hard to imagine that Leeds have much footing at all in the race to sign the Ajax ace.
With all due respect to the Elland Road outfit, Kudus is destined for bigger and better things than joining a lower-to-mid-table Premier League outfit, and the ship to sign him has surely sailed.
It’s frustrating because Leeds are doing a brilliant job at identifying these talents. Kudus and Gakpo this summer could have been incredible signings, while the likes of Josko Gvardiol and Rodrigo De Paul have been other notable near misses in the past.
Unfortunately for Leeds, they’re lacking something when it comes to finalising these negotiations, whether that’s a lack of financial incentive or a lack of prestige.
Victor Orta’s talent identification ability can’t be disputed at this point. He’s targeting so many undiscovered gems, but sadly, not enough of them are actually ending up at Elland Road.
Sadly, it looks like Kudus is going to be another Gakpo. A player Leeds wanted who has narrowly escaped their grasp.
