The Leeds United star would like to play a deep midfield role next season.
Leeds United’s Ronaldo Vieira has told The Yorkshire Evening Post he is hoping that Marcelo Bielsa deploys him in a deep midfield role next season.
The Whites are gearing up for the new campaign and big things are expected after their high-profile appointment of former Lazio, Athletic Bilbao and Argentina coach Bielsa.
It remains to be seen what sort of system the 62-year-old veteran is planning, but he will have plenty of talented midfielders at his disposal whatever happens.
As it stands, Leeds have Vieira, Lewis Baker, Adam Forshaw, Kalvin Phillips, Eunan O’Kane and Mateusz Klich as central midfield options, giving Bielsa something of a dilemma.
And although the 19-year-old has stated his preference to be used in a holding role, Vieira says that he would have no problem taking up alternative positions if it helped the team.
“I don’t really know what the gaffer is thinking but I think everyone knows my choice of position and I like to play as a holding midfielder,” he told The Yorkshire Evening Post.
“But if it comes to the case where I’d have to play a bit higher up the pitch or further down the pitch then it wouldn’t be a problem for anyone I think because we have all done it before. We have all been through it and it’s nothing new really.”
Someone as tenacious and as energetic as Vieira is best used in the deep role that he is referring to, and Bielsa is likely to have already confirmed as much after watching the youngster in training.
United kick off their new Championship campaign on August 5 when Stoke City visit Elland Road for the Potters’ first game since being relegated from the Premier League last term.
