Leeds United have seen Illan Meslier impress in goal this season, becoming their undoubted first-choice stopper.

Meslier’s form means Kiko Casilla is merely a backup, and it’s hard to imagine Leeds being in the market for a first-choice stopper.

On this day a year ago though, Leeds were being linked with a January move to sign a goalkeeper who has very strong ties to the club.

The Sunday People (17/11/2019; page 50) reported that Leeds were considering a deal to sign David Stockdale, viewing him as cover for Casilla as he faced an FA ban.

Stockdale was born in Leeds and grew up supporting the club, meaning a move to Elland Road would have been something of a dream for him.

In the end, Leeds didn’t end up signing the former Birmingham City and Brighton and Hove Albion goalkeeper, so where has he been since?

Stockdale returned to Wycome Wanderers in January, playing two games on loan for the club before turning his move permanent at the end of the season.

The 35-year-old hasn’t played at all this season, with his role at Wycombe being more of a veteran backup behind Ryan Allsop.

Stockdale may be gutted that his move to Leeds never materialised, but it’s hard to argue that the Whites made a mistake in not signing him after all, despite his love for the club.
