One of Leeds United’s alternatives to Marcelo Bielsa is a free man.

Marcelo Bielsa is Leeds United’s number one target but Matias Almeyda is reported to be the back-up option.

The Yorkshire Evening Post reported this weekend he is one of two fall-backs along with Steve Bruce in case talks with Bielsa break down.

Almeyda said his goodbyes on Monday to Mexican side Chivas Guadalajara, where he has managed successfully for the last five years, winning three titles.

ESPN Deportes reported Almeyda met with his players and staff to say farewell and thank you.

Almeyda played under Bielsa and like Tottenham boss Mauricio Pochettino, he has made a successful transition into management.

His plans for the future are unclear, but he has taken the decision to step back from his role as Chivas boss much to the disappointment of all associated with the club.

Untested in English football, he would be somewhat of a gamble by Leeds, but it could be argued he could have more long-term appeal than Bielsa, who has not lasted long at any of his club jobs over the past few seasons.

There was some hope at Chivas that Almeyda may have a U-turn and decide to stay after rumours of his departure broke a week ago, but his exit is now a formality and if Leeds want to appoint him, their task is a lot more straightforward.
