Leeds were linked with Maxim in the summer of 2017, but failed to push through a move.

It was just over a year ago that Leeds United reportedly came within a whisker of signing Stuttgart winger Alexandru Maxim, and his emphatic start to the 2018-19 season will surely alert Marcelo Bielsa.

Romanian outlet Digi Sport claimed in the summer of 2017 that Leeds were close to signing the 31-time Romania international before he opted to move to Bundesliga side Mainz.

Maxim struggled last season at Mainz, clocking up 26 appearances for the top-tier German outfit and only managing to score two goals and provide the same amount of assists.

But it appears the 28-year-old has begun to replicate the kind of form that he showed at Stuttgart before joining Mainz, with two goals and an assist in just two games. At Stuttgart, he had a hand in 52 goals in 135 games.

The Whites have signed Lewis Baker and Izzy Brown on loan from Chelsea to provide cover for Mateusz Klich and Samu Saiz in the central attacking midfield areas, as Bielsa adopts a 4-1-4-1 system.

But with the chances of landing either player on a permanent basis unclear, Bielsa has surely got to keep tabs on Maxim in order to land the Romanian if he indeed becomes available.

There is no doubt that the pocket-sized maestro can produce if given the necessary game time, and in a ball-playing side like Leeds he would certainly thrive.

Finally ending a long-winded transfer saga and bringing Maxim to Elland Road in January or indeed next summer would give Leeds the attacking vision and creativity required to either gain promotion – or survive Premier League relegation.
