Leeds United produced a remarkable comeback as they beat Aston Villa 3-2 at Villa Park on Sunday afternoon, having fallen 2-0 behind inside the first 20 minutes.

The Whites headed to Villa Park with some fitness concerns as striker Patrick Bamford missed out, and Marcelo Bielsa’s task wasn’t made any easier by left back Barry Douglas pulling out in the warm-up, forcing teenager Leif Davis to make a first Championship start.

Villa took full advantage early on as red-hot striker Tammy Abraham scored inside five minutes, and Villa made it 2-0 just over ten minutes later as Conor Hourihane scored from range.

Substitute Jack Clarke brought then Leeds back into the game at 2-1 after the break, and defender Pontus Jansson hauled the Whites level just five minutes later, before Kemar Roofe completed the comeback with a dramatic 95th minute winner.

Leeds ensured that they remain top of the Championship table at Christmas with a fightback that few could have expected given the injuries and absences in Bielsa’s squad, and fans have every right to be ecstatic with the result.

Jack Clarke, Jamie Shackleton, Liam Cooper, Kalvin Phillips, Mateusz Klich, Ezgjan Alioski, Jansson and match-winner Roofe all offered their joy at sealing three points, with even players who didn’t feature – like Douglas, Izzy Brown and Kun Temenuzhkov – all ecstatic too.
