Joel Robles is yet to make his Leeds United debut but he posted a video from training at Thorp Arch on Instagram as he battles with Kristoffer Klaesson to be Illan Meslier’s no.2 – prompting reaction from Marc Roca and Claudio Bravo.
Robles, 32, was one of nine summer signings made by Leeds. The Whites chose to bring in a third senior goalkeeper. One of more experience than both Meslier and back-up Klaesson, who boast a combined age of just 43 years.
The ex-Everton and Wigan goalkeeper was a free agent after leaving Real Betis. But he comes in on a one-year deal, to provide competition for Klaesson and further cover for Meslier. He is yet to even make a Premier League squad.
But he was on the bench in the Carabao Cup against Barnsley, which Leeds convincingly won 3-1. The experienced Spaniard has posted a video on Instagram of his work in training, being put through the paces despite his game time.
Robles has posted Leeds training video: Roca and Bravo reaction
The chances of Robles actually playing for Leeds, seem rather unlikely. Indeed, there is much more of a chance of seeing Robles in the Under-23 side. Leeds face West Brom on Friday – but Harry Christy might be preferred to develop.
But if he is relied upon. If Meslier gets injured and then Robles is needed to provide cover for Klaesson – or if he overtakes Klaesson, Robles is ready to go. That is, at least, judging by his form in the training video.
Leeds have prided themselves on bringing in players with a good attitude and the personality that fits into the family-like feel at Elland Road. Robles clearly fits that, earning praise from Roca – as well as Barcelona icon Bravo.
