It is no secret that Pablo Hernandez is enjoying an incredible season for Leeds. The Spaniard seems to be getting better with age and still providing moments of brilliance even when he is not at his best.
Whatever happens during the rest of the campaign, Hernandez has already enjoyed his best season for the Whites, having a direct hand in more goals than he has in either of his two previous seasons at Elland Road.
On Boxing Day, he took his tally of assists into double figures as his sumptuous, stoppage-time cross allowed Kemar Roofe to score a header that handed Leeds an incredible 3-2 victory against Blackburn Rovers.
And remarkably, that cross has taken Hernandez alongside Lionel Messi as the most prolific assist provider in Europe so far this term.
No other player in the top two divisions across Europe’s big fives leagues – England, Spain, Germany, France and Italy – has set up as many goals as Hernandez and Messi have, with both men boasting 10 assists.
It is a fantastic achievement from the 33-year-old, who has actually contributed five assists in his last four appearances and had a direct hand in 10 goals in his last nine games.
Some Leeds fans may have understandably felt that it was a massive blow when Samu Saiz departed earlier this month. But if Hernandez maintains anything like his current form during the remaining months of the season, it is difficult to imagine that Marcelo Bielsa’s side will miss Saiz that much at all.
