Barry Fry claims that Leeds United have made a swap offer for an unnamed Peterborough United player, in the Peterborough Evening Telegraph.
McCalmont impressed on a loan away from Leeds with Oldham Athletic this season, where he scored 10 goals.
It seems that the Whites feel that is expendable though, and have proposed a swap deal with newly promoted Championship side, Posh.
“Leeds offered to swap the player for one of ours and we turned it down flat,” Posh’s director of football said.
Peterborough are thought to be keen on McCalmont so that may not end their interest, if Leeds are open to selling him at a later date.
In terms of players that Leeds may have wanted from Peterborough, it seems most likely to be a youngster.
Johnson Clarke-Harris, of course, may be the most appealing Posh player in the market this summer – but there is no way that McCalmont possesses the same value as the striker, who scored 33 goals over the past campaign season.
Peterborough do have Ronnie Edwards, Harrison Burrows and Rickie Jade Jones who are all touted to have extremely bright futures though.
Leeds may have been trying to get ahead of the curve by proposing the swap deal for one of the teenagers, who have all featured fairly regularly in League One over the past year.
Leeds have shown a keen eye for taking young talent, with their under-23’s bursting with bright prospects now.
That may be part of the reason why Leeds seem willing to offload McCalmont, who has proven himself a very capable Football League player this term.
