Leeds United new-boy Pontus Jansson has opened up on his relationship with club owner Massimo Cellino, speaking highly of the Italian in an exclusive interview with Swedish football publication Fotbollskanalen.

Jansson moved to Elland Road on a season-long loan last month, but is yet to feature for Garry Monk’s side in the Championship, making just one appearance for the club in Leeds’ League Cup win over Luton.

The Swedish international defender spoke to Fotbollskanalen about his view on the controversial Cellino, and was full of praise for the club’s owner:

“He is the king. I’ve only met him a few times, and I had a longer talk with him before I came here. Really, really lovely person. He is typical Italian. He has liked me since he was in Cagliari and he had a great relationship with my coach in Torino.”

It makes a nice change for someone to have positive comments about the Italian, who is renowned for his interference in first-team affairs.

During his career in football ownership, he has appointed 44 different managers, and has overseen the appointments of seven managers (including caretaker) during his two-and-a-half year spell at Leeds.

With that reputation in mind, Garry Monk’s job must be considered far from safe, with Leeds languishing in 21st position in the Championship table after just one win from their opening five league games.

The Yorkshire outfit resume their Championship campaign on Saturday with a home match against surprise league-leaders Huddersfield.
