Leeds must look at Mateusz Klich’s contract situation given great form

Mateusz Klich has been one of Leeds United’s biggest surprises of the season.

Mateusz Klich’s performance in Leeds’ draw with Brentford at the weekend may not have been his best, but there is no doubt that few players in Marcelo Bielsa’s squad have provided as much of a pleasant surprise as the Poland international this season.

Even Bielsa himself must have been slightly shocked at how influential Klich has become. The midfielder began pre-season being used amongst the squad of players that Bielsa seemed to have concerns about before forcing his way into the head coach’s plans in time for the season opener with Stoke City.

And it was Klich who sent the first warning to the rest of the Championship by finishing off a superb move to bag the opening goal against Gary Rowett’s side – who many expected to set the pace and potentially run away with the division this season.

Since then, Klich has shown that his performance against Cardiff last year was the anomaly rather than his fantastic display in the Carabao Cup win over Burnley at Turf Moor, where he scored one of the coolest penalties that you will ever see during the shootout.

In fact, no player in Bielsa’s squad has had a direct hand in more goals than Klich this term. He has scored four and provided three assists in the Championship, with his latest strike proving to be one that was somehow good enough to leave some questioning whether Adam Reach did score the game’s best goal during the 1-1 draw with Sheffield Wednesday.

There is no reason for immediate alarm, but Leeds should now look at the international break as an ideal time to get contract talks underway with less than two years remaining on his current deal at Elland Road – as shown by BBC Sport.

It is not just his goalscoring and creativity that suggests that he could be a player who could make an impact in the Premier League if Leeds get there. Some of his touches and pieces of skill have been sublime at times, and Thomas Christiansen may perhaps be looking on and thinking how things may have been different for him had he shown some more faith in Klich last season.

Extending his contract would be a superb way for Leeds to keep the momentum that they currently have. It would be another statement from the Whites after what has been a brilliant start to the campaign.
