Leeds must consider looking at extending Kemar Roofe’s contract

Kemar Roofe has started the season brilliantly for Championship leaders Leeds United.

When the Yorkshire Evening Post reported in the summer that Leeds’ £3 million striker Kemar Roofe was attracting attention from one of their Championship rivals, there was probably some Whites supporters who felt that they would not be particularly disappointed if the forward moved on.

Roofe finished as the club’s top goalscorer last season, but was only battling with one rival for that particular title, and his ability to go hot and cold seemingly on a weekly basis often left the fans hugely frustrated with his form.

But just a few weeks into the new season, that decision to snub interest looks incredibly smart from Leeds, and the Whites should arguably switch their focus to looking to renew the forward’s contract given that it does not have a significantly long period left to run.

Roofe has been superb at the start of the season, scoring four goals for Marcelo Bielsa’s men to help them sit at the top of the Championship heading into the international break.

It is not just his goals that have made his performances so impressive, but his work-rate when Leeds do not have the ball has been excellent and his running to create openings for his teammates has helped the Whites become a side that asks questions of opponents all over the pitch.

Roofe looks transformed as he continues to keep big-money signing Patrick Bamford out of the side. And that should tempt Leeds to review his contract situation.

Transfermarkt shows that the forward’s deal expires at the end of next season. Leeds are in a strong position, but the Whites know all too well that letting a player’s deal run into its final year can backfire.

Roofe is clearly loving playing for Leeds right now, and he is showing the kind of form that vindicates his selection ahead of a goalscorer who can be one of the most lethal finishers in the second tier. And the club should look to keep the good feeling going by rewarding him with a new deal.
