Leeds United need to strengthen their striker options over the summer, so perhaps they should bid for the Newcastle United starlet.

Leeds Manager Paul Heckingbottom looks on prior to the Sky Bet Championship match between Aston Villa and Leeds United at Villa Park on April 13, 2018 in Birmingham, England.

After a frustrating season, Paul Heckingbottom has no shortage of issues to address amongst his Leeds squad during the summer transfer window – with a new striker surely set to be right near the very top of his list of priorities.

The Yorkshire Evening Post recently reported that a free transfer for Abel Hernandez is right at the top of the Whites’ shortlist, but Heckingbottom would certainly be forgiven for wanting at least one more deal even if they manage to get the Hull City ace through the Elland Road door.

So perhaps Heckingbottom needs to take note of reports emerging from the Chronicle earlier this week which suggested that Newcastle are ready to sell Adam Armstrong this summer despite his incredibly impressive loan spell at Blackburn Rovers.

The 21-year-old helped Rovers secure promotion out of League One. After arriving in January, Armstrong scored nine times in 21 appearances for Tony Mowbray’s men, and that should tempt Heckingbottom to consider signing him for a second time.

The Leeds boss landed the striker on loan while he was in charge of Barnsley. And while his time at Oakwell was not a major success, he is clearly capable of finding the back of the net and may now be ready to make the grade in the Championship.

It may be a gamble given his record in the second tier, but Newcastle’s willingness to sell the forward may enable Leeds to land him for a decent fee and that may take a lot of the pressure off the youngster who was part of England’s under-20 side that won the 2017 World Cup.

Hernandez would undoubtedly be a fantastic signing for the Whites this summer, but given his injury record, it may not be the smartest idea to settle for just one striker deal if they manage to get the Uruguayan in.

Targeting Armstrong has the potential to be a gamble also, but Heckingbottom should certainly consider including the Magpies ace on his list of targets as it could prove to be an inspired piece of business if he replicates his form for Blackburn at a higher level.
