Leeds United had been linked with Maxim as recently as this month.

Leeds United have missed out on signing winger Alexandru Maxim, with the Stuttgarter Zeitung confirming he has signed a deal with Bundesliga side Mainz.

Maxim was linked to Leeds earlier this month with Romanian news outlet Digi Sport claiming he was in advanced talks with the Whites.

German newspaper BILD later refuted this by reporting he did not want to leave Stuttgart to play in England’s second tier.

Maxim previously played under now departed Leeds United assistant Pep Clotet.

The Stuttgarter Zeitung report Maxim has signed a deal until 2021 with Mainz and moves for a fee of 3 million Euros (£2.65m).

The 26-year-old winger scored five goals and provided six assists last season, in 15 Bundesliga starts and 10 appearances from the bench, and helped Stuttgart win promotion as champions.

Leeds have signed one winger so far this summer, converting Hadi Sacko’s loan from Sporting Lisbon into a permanent deal.

The Whites are however closing in on one transfer from Germany, with magazine Kicker reporting that an agreement has been struck to sign Werder Bremen stopper Felix Wiedwald.
