Leeds United boss Marcelo Bielsa tried to give some clarification on Izzy Brown’s fitness earlier this week.

Brown is recovering from a torn ACL and signed on loan with Leeds shortly before the transfer deadline.

Bielsa told the Yorkshire Evening Post: “He hasn’t started to play with the ball, he hasn’t played football with us so far. It’s impossible to say when he’ll be fit. It won’t be a short time.”

So for now Leeds fans can consider Brown unavailable, to return at a later date.

It could take Brown up to December to be ready, or even into 2019.

Would it be so terrible if Brown is unavailable through to February or March?

Not necessarily. Getting Brown back for a crucial time of the season will give the squad and fanbase a big lift.

Brown is capable of playing as a number 10, as a winger, or even up front, and he will provide vital cover.

He has already achieved promotion once with Huddersfield and knows what is required to help get a team over the line to the promised land of the Premier League.

Usually teams shy away from signing players with serious injuries, but Leeds wanted to guarantee themselves Brown’s services.

That’s what makes this deal uniquely smart. Leeds are forecasting the need for fresh legs later in the season, and taking a gamble on Brown’s talent.

Club and player almost deserve for it to work out, purely for being brave enough to agree on such an unusual move.
