Leeds United’s Pontus Jansson seems non-committal over his future with the club.
With the international break upon us, one eye is being turned towards the World Cup in Russia this summer, with teams in friendly action in recent days.
Whilst England beat the Netherlands 1-0, other results around the world saw Argentina beat Italy 2-0, France lose 3-2 to Colombia having been 2-0 up, and Spain play out a 1-1 draw with Germany.
In a slightly lower-profile game on Saturday, Sweden lost 2-1 at home to Chile, which is far from the ideal preparation as they gear up to face Germany, Mexico and South Korea this summer.
Manager Janne Anderson will have decisions to make this summer, and whilst Andreas Granqvist and Manchester United’s Victor Lindelof appear to be the first-choice pairing at centre back, Pontus Jansson is knocking on the door.
Jansson, 27, seems to be third in line for Sweden in the centre back pecking order, meaning the Leeds United ace may be just one slip, one mistake or one injury away from featuring on the world’s biggest stage this summer.
That may be some cause for concern for Leeds, given that Jansson told Expressen that he wants to hear the club’s plans for next season before guaranteeing he will be at Elland Road.
A £3.5million signing from Torino in 2017 (Yorkshire Evening Post), Jansson hasn’t quite hit the height of last season this term, but he will be all too aware that impressing at the World Cup could land him interest from elsewhere.
Given Jansson’s non-committal remarks over his future and the prospect of a World Cup showing on the horizon, Leeds may face a nervy summer over Jansson – and that’s certainly not ideal, given that the focus needs to be on finding a partner for the giant Swede, rather than worrying about having to potentially replace him.
