Leeds youngster Matthew Downing has taken to Twitter after making his comeback following more than 19 months on the sidelines, and the prospect was understandably delighted to be back out on the pitch.

Not too long ago, Downing was one of the most exciting players in the Whites’ academy at a time when the Championship side really started to have little problem bringing through a number of seriously talented prospects.

The 19-year-old was named the club’s Apprentice of the Year in 2016 and made his under-21 debut at the age of just 16. But life has been much tougher for the full-back over the last couple of years.

While the likes of Tom Pearce and Bailey Peacock-Farrell has found their way into the first-team, Downing has had to go through a 19-month comeback having sustained an injury.

But Tuesday was the day that he returned to action, and he took to social media to comment on ticking off another major milestone in his comeback…

After such a torrid time, Downing would be forgiven for just wanting to enjoy being back playing for the time-being before he considers what he needs to do to progress.

But if he is capable of getting his development back on track, perhaps it may not be too long before Carlos Corberan is looking to give him regular minutes for the under-23s.
