Former Mexico and FC Barcelona manager Tata Martino is reportedly a new candidate for the Leeds United job, with the Whites struggling to appoint a successor to Jesse Marsch.

According to TNT Sports, the Elland Road side have identified the 60-year-old coach as a potential candidate to take the Leeds hot seat, with Martinio now a free agent having been sacked by the Mexican FA in late 2022 following their dismal performance at the FIFA World Cup in Qatar.

As per the report, though, the Argentine currently only has interest in taking over at Leeds at the start of next season, an issue the Whites have found with other managerial targets who are not willing to join the Premier League side midway through the campaign.

With Leeds running out of options on coaches to appoint, the Whites could soon take the approach to hire a caretaker manager to guide them through the storm that is the 2022/23 Premier League season, especially with Martino already stating his demands.

Indeed, the Argentine is one of the most well-regarded coaches in all of South America and has an impressive CV to boot, with Martino winning silverware for the likes of Barcelona, MLS side Atlanta United as well as enjoying huge success with the Paraguay national team.

Whilst Martino’s latest job with Mexico ended in humiliation at the World Cup, it doesn’t take much away from the fact that the South American coach could be well-suited to Leeds as a club, with the Argentine sharing some similarities to club legend Marcelo Bielsa in his style of management.

Leeds appointing Martino could be an excellent move if he can join now

Martino ticks a lot of boxes for what Leeds are looking for when appointing a new manager. However, with the Argentine only keen on taking the job in the summer, the Whites will have to do their best to convince the South American to join now rather than at the end of the season when everything could be too late.

As we know, Leeds need an experienced head to come in and save the club from Premier League relegation, and Martino could be the man to bring the Whites out of the darkness and build a new dynasty at the club if the Yorkshire side can bring in the 60-year-old in the coming days.
