Leeds United are interested in Middlesbrough midfielder Adam Clayton who left the Whites back in 2012.
For some, it may be a surprise to see Clayton on the Whites’ radar given how many options Thomas Christiansen has in the middle of the park, but given that others will probably argue that he almost has unfinished business at Elland Road, a move to bring him back to his old club may be a great decision.
Clayton arrived at Leeds initially in 2010. After a loan spell, he was signed permanently and spent around two years on the club’s books before leaving for Huddersfield Town in 2012.
Like many of the players who played for Leeds around that time, there was a sense when he left that it was a mistake to let him go as he appeared set to become an even better player after already establishing himself as an important squad member.
After a decent spell with the Terriers – he was named their Player of the Year in 2014 – he moved to Boro and helped the club get themselves into the Premier League, but he has since fallen out of favour at the Riverside Stadium.
He may not be a marquee addition if he did return, and he may in fact not even get into Leeds’ strongest lineup, but he would undoubtedly strengthen Christiansen’s squad and bring some additional experience to the ranks and that may be crucial given their current position in the table.
The likes of Conor Shaughnessy and Mateusz Klich have struggled to make an impact in midfield during their first few months at Elland Road, and so, adding someone like Clayton, who knows what it is like to play for a team that has got across the line and secured promotion from the second tier, may prove a masterstroke – especially if he is determined to remind fans why they were disappointed when his departure was announced nearly six years ago.
