Last summer it seemed like Sam Dalby might have a genuine chance of forcing his way into the Leeds United first team after impressive pre-season performances.

He scored for Marcelo Bielsa’s side, but it was not enough to convince the Argentine.

In January he was sent out on loan by Leeds to League Two side Morecambe.

His first month was forgettable, playing a total of five minutes out of a possible 450.

He might have given himself a bit of a lifeline yesterday.

Dalby turned out for Morecambe’s under-23 side against Doncaster Rovers, and got on the scoresheet.

The 19-year-old’s goal was enough to earn his side a 1-1 draw.

Swapping Leeds’ under-23s for Morecambe’s is not what Dalby will have had in mind. The reality is, it’s a backwards step.

However, yesterday’s goal could be a turning point for him.

He showed his coaches what they will have wanted to see, and it can only help his first team chances.

Morecambe sit 21st in League Two, scoring 37 goals in 35 games. May be it’s time they gave Dalby a proper chance.
