Matthew Pennington has told LUTV that his sole ambition currently is to help Leeds get promoted out of the Championship, and he is not looking past this season in regards to his future.

Pennington joined the Whites in the summer from Everton on a season-long loan. Injury has largely prevented the centre-back from being able to enjoy a run in the side but he has played the last two games, enduring mixed emotions after playing extremely well against Bristol City and then really struggling in the clash with Sheffield United on Friday.

With plenty of uncertainty at the 23-year-old’s parent club currently, Pennington would surely be forgiven for having one eye on what is going on with the Toffees and focusing on making enough of an impact at Elland Road that he sends a statement to the Goodison Park hierarchy.

However, the defender has insisted that his main ambition right now involves trying to help Leeds capitalise on their current position in the Championship, and he is not thinking about anything beyond this season.

“To get promotion with Leeds this season, that’s my ambition. That’s what I’m looking forward to,” he told LUTV when asked what his ambition is.

“No, not really. You’ve got to think about the next game, you can’t think too far ahead otherwise you’ll get lost in ideas and dreams,” he added, when asked whether he had thought about the future may hold for him.

While Leeds fans may prefer to see the defender stay at Elland Road beyond this season – though that opinion may have changed somewhat after his performance against the Blades – the club may also feel the benefit if he is determined to break into Everton’s side more regularly from next season.

With Everton showing in the summer that they are not afraid to spend money, he will have to do extremely well at Leeds to prove himself worthy of more game-time at Goodison Park, and therefore, Christiansen will be hoping that having something to prove will bring the best out of the youngster after a bright start to life with the Whites.
