It is early days but 2018/19 has not been kind so far to Juan Foyth.

2018/19 could have gone one of three ways for Juan Foyth.

Option A) Toby Alderweireld could have left, Foyth stars in pre-season, and establishes himself as a starter for Tottenham Hotspur.

Option B) Foyth gets loaned out to Leeds United to link up with Marcelo Bielsa, a coach he admitted this summer [via FoxSports] was ‘great’, and who tried to sign him for Lille a year ago.

Or Option C) Foyth gets injured, does not play a minute of pre-season or August football and gets omitted from the club’s Champions League squad.

Unfortunately for Foyth, Option C is where he is at.

His pre-season injury was a crushing blow, killing off his chances of making an early statement, and even costing him a loan move.

Foyth did not play a single minute in the Premier League last season following his summer switch from Estudiantes in Argentina.

His only game time came in the Carabao Cup and FA Cup, and the Champions League.

Now with the Champions League off the table until 2019 if Spurs qualify, Foyth is reliant on the Carabao Cup for games.

He faces a race against time to be fit for Tottenham’s Carabao Cup game against Watford on September 25.

After Spurs’ loss to Watford in the Premier League, there is a chance manager Mauricio Pochettino decides he cannot afford to rotate his team, especially after the criticism he faced for his cup competition policy last season and continuing quest to try and win his first trophy.

Beyond that it is hard to see Foyth getting game time over the upcoming months.

A loan in January, under Bielsa or elsewhere, may turn out to be precisely what he needs.
