Leeds letting Marcus Antonsson leave would surely be mistake with Whites still needing Plan B

Leeds United were arguably a little too one-dimensional at times this season, and ultimately missed out on the Championship play-offs.

The Daily Express has recently suggested that Marcus Antonsson is likely to quit Leeds this summer after a frustrating first year at Elland Road that saw him make him just 16 Championship appearances with only six starts along the way.

While some United supporters would be forgiven for not being particularly disappointed about the prospect of losing Antonsson – he scored just once in the league – it is surely fair to argue that he could have a role to play next term, and thus, letting him leave would be a gamble.

The Swede certainly struggled to make any impact in the 4-2-3-1 system that Garry Monk quickly settled on this term, but with the Whites narrowly missing out on the play-off places, that lack of variety seemed to be fairly costly as the campaign went on and teams began to have a good idea of how to play against Leeds.

With that in mind, Monk may want to consider using pre-season to work on another system that the side can switch to when the favoured plan does not seem to be working, perhaps adopting a formation that sees two strikers deployed.

Antonsson’s movement is so clever when he has a strike partner alongside him to exploit the gaps that he creates, and in Chris Wood, he would have one of the division’s best finishers alongside him to make sure that his smart runs are capitalised upon.

And as he proved during his final year with former club Kalmar, Antonsson is also more than capable of finding the back of the net himself, so should Monk look to work on a brand new system that calls for two strikers, the 26-year-old perhaps deserve another chance to prove exactly why the Whites brought him to the club in the first place.
