Leeds United and Sheffield United are battling it out for automatic-promotion out of the Championship.

Kalvin Phillips and his teammates celebrate winning the Sky Bet Championship match between Rotherham United and Leeds United at the New York Stadium, Rotherham on Saturday 26th January...

In comments reported by Leeds Live, Leeds star Kalvin Phillips has suggested that he does speak to Billy Sharp, and joked that he hopes to be able to ask the Sheffield United captain how the play-offs went once the season ends.

It does appear that the Whites and the Blades are battling it out for the second automatic-promotion spot in the Championship. Norwich City are now seven points clear of second, and West Brom may have a little too much work to do to catch both of the teams immediately above them.

Chris Wilder’s side have the advantage right now. But Leeds go into Tuesday’s game with Preston North End knowing how quickly everything can change. At one stage during their clash with Millwall, they looked set to fall four points behind Sheffield United, but ended the day ahead of their rivals in the table.

Phillips was asked about whether he speaks to those in the other promotion-chasing sides. And while he admitted that he does not tend to talk to his former Whites teammate about football, he joked that he may make an exception depending on how the promotion race plays out.

“You know a few people, Billy Sharp for example, but don’t really talk about football,” he said, as reported by Leeds Live.

“Hopefully I can ask him how the play-offs went at the end of the season”

It is going to be unbearable for Leeds and Sheffield United fans over the coming weeks. Whites supporters will certainly be hoping that there are more twists to come with Wilder’s men knowing that it is in their hands right now.

The play-offs will not be easy for the side that misses out given how close they look set to come to finishing in the top two. That challenge of playing additional games will certainly get no easier if the race goes right down to the wire as it is currently threatening to do.
