Leeds United’s hero Tyler Denton has told LUTV that left-back rival Charlie Taylor is “different class” but admitted that he wants the 22-year-old’s place in the side.

The 20-year-old defender enjoyed a dream debut for Leeds on Tuesday by hitting a wonderful winning goal in their 1-0 League Cup victory at Luton Town last night.

Denton was one of 11 changes made by manager Garry Monk but he certainly improved his chances of making his Championship bow in Saturday’s trip to Nottingham Forest.

In order to do that, the youngster must displace 22-year-old Taylor, who is one of Leeds’ biggest names and picked up the club’s Player of the Year last season.

But although Denton acknowledges how good Taylor is, the youngster admits he has a taste for first-team action following his heroics at Luton.

“I always praise Charlie Taylor. He’s different class. I’m not going to argue because everybody knows how good he is,” he told LUTV when asked about playing time.

“I’ve grown up with him. He’s only a couple of years older than me but he’ll tell me what to do in training. He’s a calming influence and he’s great to have around.”

Asked if he wants Taylor’s place in the team, Denton added: “I do yeah but I’ll bide my time. It’s a team game at the end of the day.”

Indeed, Denton will have a new hunger about him going forward as he looks to replicate the high of being named in a Leeds senior XI, but displacing Taylor is a big ask at the moment.

It is worth remembering that he performed well and scored versus Luton, who are two divisions below Leeds. The Whites will be playing much better teams every week and Denton, at the moment, is untested at Championship level.
