Gaetano Berardi is an extremely popular figure amongst the Leeds United faithful.

Leeds defender Gaetano Berardi has joked with LUTV that the world would end and he would wave all of the fans onto the pitch for a pitch invasion if he finally ended his goal drought.

Amongst the fans, Berardi is perhaps – along with Pontus Jansson – the most popular member of the Whites squad currently due to his work-rate and willingness to play anywhere as if it is his strongest position.

So it would hardly be a surprise if the news announced on Leeds’ official website that the Swiss has signed a new three-year contract at Elland Road was met with an overwhelmingly positive reaction amongst the supporters.

And the fans will be desperately hoping that the new contract gives him the opportunity to finally find the back of the net after 228 career games, which has included 83 appearances for the Whites since his arrival in 2014.

And Berardi suggested that the supporters would not be the only ones to get carried away if he was able to score that first goal of his career.

“I don’t want to say anything about this because I just want to think about the games, and now I just want to be fit as soon as possible. If I score, it would be the end of the world,” he joked with LUTV.

“Yeah I will wave all the fans on the pitch,” he added when told that him scoring would spark a pitch invasion.

There is certainly no question that if Leeds can put themselves into promotion contention this season, and Berardi decides to open his account at a time when they desperately need a goal, that strike will be all the sweeter for the Whites fans who are desperate to see the full-back end his drought, and may perhaps leave many ready to join the defender in the celebrations.
