Uwe Rosler has been talking up Sol Bamba’s importance to Leeds United.
New Leeds United head coach Uwe Rosler has told BBC Radio Leeds of his admiration for new signing Sol Bamba.
The club announced the deal via their official website on Wednesday, with the Ivorian agreeing a permanent deal leaving Serie A side Palermo.
Bamba spent a successful period on loan last season with Leeds, and Rosler described the centre-back as possessing ‘fantastic qualities’ – in particular aiding the team’s lack of height.
Speaking to BBC Radio Leeds, Rosler said: “He brings a lot of qualities of what we are looking for and need to have. In general we are not the tallest team, he is quality in the air. he likes to defend he likes to attack the ball in both boxes.
“Everybody gave Sol a glowing reference, in trying to unify the dressing room, with cultures, and languages together. He can communicate with whole squad.”
Discussing the conversation he had with the former Leicester defender before the deal was concluded, he added: “I spoke to him and he gave me clear impression he wanted to stay in UK. In his spell here he performed really well we really hope he can continue in this level.”
Sol Bamba’s aerial prowess
| Headed clearances per game | Aerial duels won per game | Appearances | Mins Played | |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Sol Bamba | 5.11 | 4 | 19 | 1,710 |
| Jason Pearce | 5.1 | 3.29 | 21 | 1,802 |
| Liam Cooper | 4.69 | 3.17 | 29 | 2,317 |
| Giuseppe Bellusci | 3.7 | 1.97 | 30 | 2,586 |
| Scott Wootton | 2.74 | 2.61 | 23 | 2,046 |
| Gaetano Berardi | 2.18 | 1.36 | 22 | 1,710 |
The numbers back up Rosler’s description of Bamba’s quality in the air. He made more headed clearances per game and won more aerial duels per game than any other player to perform for Leeds United last season.
He is a strong candidate to win the captain’s armband full time from Liam Cooper, who is still growing into the club, and Rosler is right to be delighted to seal his permanent addition.
