Leeds United signed the attacker but his chances could be few and far between.
Leeds United did not waste time worrying about the departure of last season’s top-scorer Chris Wood this summer. Instead they set about signing a whole host of attacking options to ensure the Whites are ready for a sustained title tilt between now and May.
Some of those players have hit the ground running, namely Samu Saiz, Ezgjan Alioski and Pierre-Michel Lasogga, while others – such as Jay-Roy Grot and Caleb Ekuban – have shown tantalising glimpses of their undoubted ability.
But late addition Pawel Cibicki has not been so lucky, and even at this early stage of the campaign it looks like the Swedish forward will have to seize any slim chance that comes his way, no matter how brief they may initially be.
The 23-year-old’s versatility means that in time he should get opportunities, yet with Leeds’ first-choice options excelling thus far, the only way Cibicki looks set to force his way in is to hit the ground running from his very first minute on the pitch.
That is easier said than done, with many players needing time to settle into a game let alone a new club in a new country. But Lasogga and Kemar Roofe are enjoying their own private battle up front while Leeds’ attacking midfield options are amazing even before you add Cibicki to the list.
What the Swede needs to do is take a leaf out of Stuart Dallas’s book. The Northern Ireland international has barely featured this season and yet he already has two goals under his belt.
That is the kind of seize-the-day attitude Cibicki needs as he attempts to make his mark on a Leeds side suddenly full of attacking options.
If Cibicki does that, he will give manager Thomas Christiansen yet another wonderful selection headache. But do not expect him to be starting in the league unless he can justify it either from the bench or in the Whites’ ongoing EFL Cup campaign.
