This time two years ago, things looked prosperous for former Leeds United goalkeeper Felix Wiedwald.

He had just signed for a big English club and he would’ve been looking forward to helping the Whites win promotion back to the Premier League – but it didn’t quite turn out like that.

Instead, the German stopper, a £500,000 signing from Werder Bremen [The Express], lost the gloves to Andy Lonergan by October following an error-laden first few months and although he won his place back, Wiedwald never looked at home in West Yorkshire.

Leeds ripped up his contract last summer and 12 months on, it’s clear that the 29-year-old’s career has taken a major nose dive since joining United in 2017.

He joined Eintracht Frankfurt as a free agent last summer but didn’t make a single appearance for the Bundesliga club, who loaned him to second-tier side MSV Duisberg in January.

They ended up being relegated to the third tier of German football, capping a dreadful two-year period for the former Germany Under-20 international.

His trajectory looks quite depressing when compared to that of Lonergan, who also left Leeds last summer. Lonergan hasn’t torn up any trees since leaving Elland Road, but he is training with European champions Liverpool at the moment in what may lead to something permanent if he impresses.

For Wiedwald, it’s back to square one. He has returned to Frankfurt following his stint with Duisberg, but there’s nothing to suggest that his career is going to enjoy an upturn in fortunes.
