Leeds United managing director fielded questions over Chris Wood’s future at the club.

Leeds United’s most important piece of summer transfer business has been keeping hold of star striker Chris Wood.

Wood finished as the Championship’s top goalscorer last season and has continued to be committed to the club despite the exit of last season’s manager Garry Monk.

The Mirror reported last week that Leeds are demanding in excess of £20 million for the New Zealand international, a figure they hope will be a deterrent to interested clubs.

Last night managing director Angus Kinnear spoke at a BBC Radio Leeds season preview, and spoke pragmatically.

His comments caused worry among Leeds supporters, who took this as reason to believe Wood’s future is not set in stone at the club.

There is a whole month for Leeds to negotiate before the transfer window closes, and only then will they be able to breathe a sigh of relief.

Leeds have not received any offers for Wood so far, and they will hope it stays that way.

One club linked by The Mirror are Swansea City, who could yet get a cash windfall if they sell Gylfi Sigurdsson to Everton for £50 million as speculated.

Wood’s 27 goals from last season would leave Leeds with a huge hole to fill at this stage, and Leeds fans understandably hope that Kinnear’s comments are diplomatic, and their idea of a good offer is even above the £20 million speculated.

At this stage of the summer Leeds have little time to sign a top class replacement for Wood, and contrary to what Kinnear says, at no price should they consider a sale if they are serious about winning promotion.
