Leeds United have announced that academy star Niall Huggins has agreed a one year professional contract with the Elland Road club.

The 18-year-old, who has impressed with Leeds’ Under-18s side this term, has put pen to paper with the Whites until July 2020, as reported by the official club website.

Huggins netted 12 goals in 29 matches for Mark Jackson’s side, and was rewarded with a call-up to the Wales Under-21s squad for a week’s training camp in March.

He will now link up with Carlos Corberan’s Under-23s, who will be looking to build on an impressive campaign of their own after winning the Professional Development League title in 2018-19.

Huggins was sidelined for eight months the season before last and as such is delighted to have secured his future at Elland Road, expressing his desire to kick on and follow in the footsteps of players such as Jack Clarke and Jamie Shackleton.

“The last year has been really good for me,” he told the official Leeds website. “The season before I was injured for eight months, so to come back and make a big impact for the team has been massive.

“Getting this deal is a really big achievement for me and it is a really proud moment to get it done. I want to push on next season and try to make an impact for the Under-23s, you’ve got players like Jack Clarke and Jamie Shackleton pushing on into the first team and it is good to see and gives me a lot to look forward to next season.”

Huggins also took to Twitter to express his happiness, posting on his own account:
