Leeds United fans had no problem reminding Manchester United that they beat Bristol City in the Championship earlier this season.

With Arsenal, Manchester City and Chelsea already through to the last four of the Carabao Cup as Bristol City’s tie with Manchester United approached stoppage-time, there can be no doubt where the upset of the round came from, with the Robins scoring in the 92nd minute to book their place in the semi-finals.

A stunning goal from Joe Bryan and the winner from Korey Smith ensured that there would be a Championship side in the next round of the competition – and the supporters of one of their second tier rivals seemed to be particularly pleased with the result.

Given the rivalry between Leeds and Manchester United, the Elland Road faithful probably needed no additional motivation to celebrate as Jose Mourinho’s men’s hopes of retaining their trophy were dashed thanks to a team in the division below.

But the fact that United were knocked out by Bristol City at Ashton Gate gave Leeds fans additional ammunition due to the result that Thomas Christiansen’s men secured when they visited the same ground earlier in the campaign.

Leeds remain one of just two sides to beat the Robins on their own ground this season, and they did it in emphatic fashion back in October, with a brace from Samuel Saiz and a second-half strike from Pierre-Michel Lasogga giving the visitors a 3-0 win.

And the fact that Manchester United were unable to beat the same opposition on Wednesday has left many Leeds fans suggesting on social media that they have got one over on their rivals.
