The Whites have stumbled in the Championship over the past few weeks but Hernandez’s comments suggest the squad remains calm and collected.
Things haven’t exactly gone according to plan for Leeds United in the opening weeks of 2019, and the culmination of this was the painful 3-1 defeat at the hands of Norwich City last Saturday.
Since the start of the year, the Whites’ form has wobbled, with three defeats in all competitions in January – the 4-2 loss to Nottingham Forest on New Year’s Day, the 2-1 defeat at Queens Park Rangers in the FA Cup and the 2-1 league loss at Stoke City (official Leeds website).
Although Leeds did beat Derby County 2-0 and seemed to have got their form back on track with a 2-1 win at Rotherham United, their Elland Road clash against their title rivals yielded a loss which saw the two teams switch positions in the top two of the standings.
However, Whites ace Pablo Hernandez insists the mood in the camp remains positive, and even though he admits the season has been hard up to this point, he says the whole squad is committed to giving their all on the pitch and, crucially, the optimism in their ultimate goal of reaching the Premier League is still there.
“It’s been a hard season but we have a good position in the table,” the 33-year-old exclusively told Football League World this week.
“Obviously the last games we have just won two in the last six, but I think we are still in a good position to fight for our target and to fight for going to the Premier League… we give our all on the pitch.”
With alarm bells beginning to ring among sections of the Leeds fanbase, it’s important that the players show calm and collectedness, which Hernandez has done well in this instance, and hopefully things will steady for the team in terms of results.
