Leeds United have been linked with a move for Red Bull Salzburg forward Moanes Dabour.
Dabour has scored 11 times in just 14 top flight games this term, while he has also scored three goals in five Europa League games, so it certainly appears that he may be a fantastic addition to the Leeds squad.
Fans may be forgiven for questioning whether targeting the Israel international is definitely the right move given his lack of experience in the Championship – a feeling that may not be helped with some of the Whites’ summer signings, especially in the striker department, failing to exactly capture the imagination.
But perhaps Leeds supporters can allow themselves to be excited about the links simply based on the last player who moved from Salzburg to join an English side on a permanent basis.
Sadio Mane spent around two years in Austria before moving to the Premier League to join Southampton in 2014. His time on the south coast was incredibly successful as he scored 25 goals in 75 games in all competitions for the Saints.
And that form earned him a move to Liverpool in 2016, which BBC Sport reported at the time cost the Reds a staggering £34 million. And while he has struggled with injury at Anfield, his form has suggested that he is well worth the money, as he scored 13 top flight goals in his first season on Merseyside.
Dabour may not be the next Mane exactly – and Leeds may struggle to land him if he is – but he is just five goals off Mane’s best return in a league season with Salzburg already, so if Leeds could sign him and he replicates his current form once he arrives at Elland Road, then it would be no surprise to see a number of sides turn to their attention to Salzburg to see what other gems they may have.
