Leeds United are reportedly still pursuing Carpi’s Jerry Mbakogu.

Leeds United’s season comes to an end on Sunday afternoon, and after starting so well under Thomas Christiansen, their 2018 form means big changes could arrive this summer.

Paul Heckingbottom has won just three times since replacing Christiansen back in February, and after a host of Victor Orta signings flopped, Leeds fans are hoping for more proven Championship players to arrive this summer.

However, the Yorkshire Evening Post have offered a transfer update ahead of the summer window, as they claim that the Whites are still pursuing a £4million move for Carpi striker Jerry Mbakogu.

A January move was rumoured, but it’s stated that Leeds could still make a move for the Nigerian striker, who has been struggling with injury since the turn of the year.

The 25-year-old hitman, who now qualifies for a work permit having been given Italian citizenship, has hardly been prolific in Serie B with just six goals in 22 games for Carpi this term.

Whilst Mbakogu’s pace and power could make him dangerous, Leeds fans aren’t sold on the move, and they have every right to be frustrated given links to more proven Championship players like Oliver McBurnie.

A favourite of Heckingbottom having attempted to sign him for Barnsley last summer and then finally signing him for the Tykes in January, McBurnie – born in Leeds – is wanted by the Whites this summer according to the Daily Mail, after hitting nine goals in 16 games for Barnsley.

Mbakogu’s injury record, age, fee and goalscoring form all count against him when compared to McBurnie, and when you add in that he has no experience of English football, it’s no surprise that these Leeds fans on Twitter were left bewildered by the continued interest in Mbakogu.
