Leeds United were linked with now-West Ham striker Jordan Hugill.
West Ham United pulled off just the one deal on deadline day, as they managed to lure Preston North End striker Jordan Hugill to the London Stadium.
The Hammers were looking for a new forward, given that Andy Carroll and Marko Arnautovic are both out injured and Diafra Sakho has been offloaded to Rennes – and they managed to land Hugill in the final moments of deadline day.
Hugill, 25, was a former non-league ace with Seaham Red Star, Consett, Marske United and Whitby Town, but has impressed since leaving Port Vale for Preston in 2014, notching 12 Championship goals last season.
This term, the powerful striker has scored 10 times in 29 games in all competitions, and has now earned his move to the Premier League, in a move which has left West Ham fans a little underwhelmed.
Hugill is far from flashy, and will look to win West Ham fans over with his work rate and hold-up play, though rival fans have suggested that the striker is very much overpriced, with BBC Sport claiming the fee is around £10million, though £8million and £9million have also been mentioned.
One other club linked with Hugill was Leeds United, with the Daily Mail reporting that the Whites had an £8million bid rejected, as Thomas Christiansen’s men looked for attacking reinforcements.
After Hugill completed his move to West Ham, Leeds fans took to Twitter to discuss the deal, with many suggesting that Hugill was too expensive, and the Whites pulled off a better move by signing Tyler Roberts from West Brom.
Some compared Hugill’s move to Chris Wood’s departure from Leeds to Burnley over the summer, with the general consensus that Leeds were wise to back away from paying so much to sign Hugill.
