Marcelo Bielsa has confirmed that Kalvin Phillips is set to start Leeds United’s next game on the bench.

Leeds fans have become used to Marcelo Bielsa naming his lineup a couple of days before a game in recent times, but they were handed something of a surprise with the boss’ latest squad announcement.

The Whites have been boosted with the news that Pontus Jansson is back from suspension. But that has left Bielsa with something of a dilemma as he finds himself in the unusual position of not being far away from having most of his squad available.

Jansson has been a colossus in recent times, so his return would have been expected. But some supporters are clearly concerned by who Bielsa has decided to leave out to make way for the Swede.

In comments reported by Leeds Live, Bielsa has confirmed that Kalvin Phillips is set to drop down to the bench, with Adam Forshaw keeping his spot in holding midfield.

Forshaw was superb against Derby, but his form has come in for criticism at times. Meanwhile, Phillips, in that midfield role, has arguably been Leeds’ player of the season.

And while every fan seemed to be hesitant when it came to questioning Bielsa’s decision, there were plenty who are not convinced about the decision to leave Phillips out of what is arguably Leeds’ biggest game of the season, with promotion rivals Norwich City coming to Elland Road.
