A large number of Leeds United fans were left in awe of Kasper Schmeichel’s World Cup heroics, and many made the same comment on Twitter.

A number of Leeds fans took to Twitter to comment on Kasper Schmeichel’s performance during Denmark’s dramatic loss to Croatia in the last 16 of the World Cup, with many keen to point out what a terrible deal it was that saw the stopper leave Elland Road seven years ago.
Schmeichel may not now be gearing up for a quarter-final, but he was arguably the star of the show as the Danes were knocked out on penalties. The Leicester City stopper took the game all the way by saving Luka Modric’s spot-kick in the dying minutes of extra time and he would ultimately save two penalties in the shootout to keep his country level after his teammates had missed the previous attempts.

It was not enough however, and Croatia set up a last eight tie with hosts Russia for later this week. But Schmeichel’s extraordinary display certainly caught the eye of the Leeds supporters nearly seven years to the day that the club sold him.
It did not take the performance in Nizhny Novgorod to make Leeds fans realise that selling the 31-year-old was a massive mistake. That fact seemed abundantly clear from the moment that it was apparent that he was on his way to Leicester.

The deal – which cost the Foxes a staggering £1.25 million, according to the Daily Mail – has probably proved to be one of Leicester’s best. Meanwhile, Leeds’ best year by some distance since his departure came when they finished seventh in the Championship, which is also the place that they ended up in during the stopper’s one season at Elland Road. Their struggles to get promoted are not entirely down to Schmeichel’s departure, but his exit came at a time when Leeds were regularly cashing in on their best players.
And that frustration over that period clearly returned on Sunday as the Leeds fans watched Schmeichel so nearly guide Denmark into the quarter-final of the World Cup. Here is what some of the supporters were saying about his performance…
