Rowett teased Leeds man Phillips at the start of the season, but it has backfired.

Gary Rowett has been sacked by Stoke City with the Potters currently sitting way down in 14th place in the Championship – and Leeds United fans have teased the manager after a video alongside Kalvin Phillips at the start of the season.

The former Burton Albion and Birmingham City manager took over at the Britannia Stadium in the summer from Paul Lambert following the club’s relegation from the Premier League.

He had previous successful stints at Burton, Birmingham and Derby and was considered one of the best English managers outside the Premier League in recent times.

But it was not to be at Stoke, with Rowett only guiding his side to eight wins in 26 Championship matches despite spending big on the likes of Benik Afobe, Tom Ince, Ryan Woods and Sam Clucas.

At the start of the season, Leeds ace Phillips stated that he was hoping his side would get off to a solid start by beating Rowett’s Stoke City in the first game of the season – with Rowett responding: “He hasn’t seen the bookmakers odds.”

It was a video that went viral after Leeds comfortably beat Stoke 3-1 at Elland Road, thanks to goals from Matuesz Klich, Pablo Hernandez and captain Liam Cooper.

Since Rowett’s sacking on Tuesday morning, the video has come to the fore on Twitter again and Leeds fans are now teasing Rowett for his pre-season comments after losing his job with the Staffordshire-based club.
