Leeds United reportedly came desperately close to signing Swansea City winger Dan James in the January transfer window.
A number of Leeds fans have taken to Twitter to comment on Dan James’ performance in Swansea’s FA Cup defeat to Manchester City on Saturday, with many ruing the Whites’ inability to complete a January deal for the winger.
Graham Potter’s men were knocked out of the competition in controversial circumstances, with the Premier League side equalising following a penalty decision that would have surely been overturned had VAR been available, while their winner came from Sergio Aguero, who had been in an offside position.
The Championship side had looked to be on course to cause a huge upset as they led 2-0 at the break at the Liberty Stadium, and James was one of the players to run City ragged.
The wide-man produced a superb run in the build-up to the second goal, and he seemed to cause all sorts of problems with his frightening pace.
For Leeds fans, it was painful viewing on what had already been a tough day following their 1-0 defeat to Sheffield United that has left them outside of the automatic-promotion spots in the Championship.
James had come agonisingly close to moving to Elland Road in January. The Telegraph reports that the youngster had completed a medical ahead of a £1.5 million loan that would have become a £7 million permanent deal if Marcelo Bielsa’s men were promoted, and potentially risen to £10 million. However, the Swans pulled the plug on deadline day and James is now in contract talks with his current club.
And it seems that many Leeds supporters are resigned to the fact that they will probably not be signing the 21-year-old in the future. His value has certainly increased, and his performance against Manchester City is only going to make more sides sit up and take notice.
Meanwhile, some are convinced that he could have made a big difference in a promotion race that is promising to go right down to the wire.
