A number of Leeds United fans were impressed by Andy Lonergan’s comments on Bailey Peacock-Farrell.

A number of Leeds fans have taken to Twitter to react to comments that Andy Lonergan made to BBC Radio Leeds where he suggested that he gets as much pleasure from seeing Bailey Peacock-Farrell do well in the Whites’ goal as he would if he was the one performing well as the first-choice at Elland Road.

It has not been an easy first season back for Lonergan. His first spell at the club saw him play well enough to arguably be considered Leeds’ best player that season, but he has been unable to replicate that form in his second stint.

He did get a chance as number one in 2017, but after a couple of bright displays, he made one or two blunders that saw Felix Wiedwald given another opportunity. When the German floundered again however, injury to Lonergan prompted Paul Heckingbottom to promote Bailey Peacock-Farrell. And to say that the youngster grabbed the opportunity with both hands would be an understatement.

The 21-year-old was superb during the final weeks of the season. If any of the current crop of stoppers is going to be Leeds’ number one next season, it is surely Peacock-Farrell. In fact, the Yorkshire Evening Post recently reported that Wiedwald will leave this summer and Lonergan may follow him out of the Elland Road door.

Lonergan did not exactly discuss his own future while talking to BBC Radio Leeds, but did open up about Peacock-Farrell’s own emergence into the side – and he insisted that cannot praise the youngster high enough.

“I really enjoy it. It might sound strange to people but I’ve not played much but I have enjoyed it. And even when we’re not getting the results, I still love being there,” he told BBC Radio Leeds when asked about his second Leeds spell.

“Bailey’s come through this season and I’m taking as much pleasure in him playing well as me playing well. I really get on with him, he’s a great lad and I’m delighted for him. If that means me not playing, that’s the way it is.”

Interestingly, the comments have prompted plenty of discussion on social media. While a minority of supporters almost feel that Lonergan’s attitude is not right as he should be targeting that number one spot rather than almost admitting defeat, most of the fans appear to be delighted with the class that the 34-year-old has shown.

In fact, some have even hinted that they would look to keep Lonergan around as he may be the sort of character that Peacock-Farrell needs to have working with him as he continues to learn.
