The Sun (14/4 p61) report the Saints want to sign Phillips if Leeds fail to win promotion. Leeds would demand a £20 million fee.
Southampton’s hopes are at risk, with a deal off the table entirely if Leeds win promotion.
The Whites are in second place, four points clear of third, with four games remaining.
This means Leeds are in control of their own destiny, and Phillips’ future.
The midfielder has been integral to the Whites’ success under manager Marcelo Bielsa this season.

Leeds did cash in on England under-20 international Ronaldo Vieira last summer to Sampdoria, which had seemed unlikely beforehand.
This was one of the financial sacrifices they had to make to fund their promotion bid and bring in players.
If they reach the Premier League, Leeds will no longer need to sell their top stars.
