Garry Monk wanted to sign Ashley Fletcher from West Ham when he was at Leeds. Now he is set to bring him to Middlesbrough.

After a year of trying, Garry Monk is finally going to get his wish to sign Ashley Fletcher.

HITC Sport reported last night that Middlesbrough have seen a £7 million bid accepted by West Ham for the forward, who is set to leave the Hammers’ training camp to undergo a medical.

Fletcher still has to decide whether to join Middlesbrough, but his chances of first team football at West Ham have been severely dented by the recent additions of Javier Hernandez and Marko Arnautovic.

This will be Monk’s fourth attempt to sign Fletcher, having attempted to do so three times at Leeds.

Monk tried to convince him to join permanently last summer when it became clear he did not wish to renew his Manchester United contract, before the Yorkshire Evening Post reported the same transfer window that he wanted to bring him in on loan after he joined West Ham instead.

Leeds tried again in January to land the Fletcher, and again were unsuccessful with West Ham struggling to bring in strikers of their own.

Now at Middlesbrough after controversially walking out on Leeds, he is armed with the financial capital to tempt West Ham into a sale.

£7 million is a lot of money, but Middlesbrough have spent more than any Championship team this transfer window so far and are showing no signs of slowing down.
