Leeds have ended their pursuit of Jerry Mbakogu.
Leeds United’s pursuit of striker Jerry Mbakogu is over after the Whites called the deal off.
Leeds began chasing Mbakogu at the end of January, with Tuttomercatoweb reporting they sent scouts to watch him in action for Italian side Carpi.
A work permit proved too complex to arrange at short notice and a provisional deal was agreed for Leeds to activate this summer, with Mbakogu being granted Italian citizenship in between.
New boss Marcelo Bielsa has not been keen on a move and the Yorkshire Evening Post reported yesterday that Leeds have written to Carpi to inform them they do not wish to sign Mbakogu any longer.
Mbakogu is a target man who could have suited Bielsa’s system, but his goalscoring record was poor even in Serie B.
He missed several weeks of action over the last few months with a persistent knee injury and this will have been a factor in Leeds’ decision.
Fans were not overly upset to miss out on a deal despite Carpi being willing to lowet their asking price for the striker.
