Leeds fans react as Monk and Clotet reportedly near Birmingham move

Garry Monk is reportedly set to become the new Birmingham City boss.

Birmingham City’s 2-1 defeat away at Nottingham Forest on Saturday afternoon proved to be Steve Cotterill’s final game in charge of the Blues, as he was sacked after the final whistle.

Goals from Joe Lolley and Matty Cash condemned Cotterill to a fifth straight defeat in the Championship, and Birmingham promptly sacked Cotterill in the hope of avoiding relegation.

Birmingham sit 22^nd in the Championship table, two points adrift of safety after a torrid run of form, and need to turn their results around in order to beat the drop into League One.

It seems that Birmingham will make a swift decision on Cotterill’s replacement, as The Sun report that Garry Monk will be handed the job – and the task of keeping the club in the Championship.

Monk, 38, has been out of management since being sacked by Middlesbrough in December, having won 12 of his 26 games in charge of the club following their relegation from the Premier League.

Formerly of Swansea City and Leeds United, Monk is now looking to rebuild his reputation as a manager again, and is taking something of a gamble by heading to St. Andrews, with Birmingham in turmoil.

With former Leeds staff members Pep Clotet and James Beattie allegedly set to join Monk at Birmingham, Leeds fans have been taking to Twitter to offer their reactions, with some mocking Monk for how his career has taken a nosedive since leaving Elland Road last summer.

However, some would rather have Monk in charge of Leeds than current boss Paul Heckingbottom, feeling that he and Spaniard Clotet – recently sacked by Oxford United – are an effective duo, and could have taken Leeds further.
