Marcelo Bielsa has suggested that Leeds United are not expecting to sign a new defender during the January transfer window.

Marcelo Bielsa may have surprised plenty of Leeds supporters during his press conference ahead of the Whites’ clash with Bristol City by suggesting he is not looking at signing another defender in January.

Leeds have endured a torrid time with injuries already this season. Luke Ayling and Gaetano Berardi are expected to be out until the new year, and Pontus Jansson is likely to be on the sidelines this weekend. That leaves Liam Cooper as the one remaining centre-back in the senior side.

But, in comments reported by Leeds Live, Bielsa insisted that the setback surrounding Jansson will not change his January plans regarding bolstering their options at the back.

“No. We will have Jansson, Berardi and Ayling back and that will be enough,” he responded when asked whether Leeds will look to sign a defender in January.

Unsurprisingly, several of the Elland Road faithful have taken to Twitter to express their concern about Bielsa’s latest comments.

While Berardi and Ayling will be back by January, the current predicament could easily repeat itself during the second-half of the campaign and Leeds could be short of options for the business end of the season.

And with the Whites seeing their promotion charges fall away in the previous two years, many fans are worried that history may be about to repeat itself if Bielsa remains convinced that he has enough cover at the back.

Bielsa has obviously got very little wrong since arriving at Leeds in the summer. But some supporters believe that he may be about to take a huge gamble that may prove to be a costly mistake.
