Leeds Unites striker Caleb Ekuban has told the Yorkshire Evening Post in a press conference that teammate Pierre-Michel Lasogga could be ruled out for two weeks – and fans have reacted by describing the news as a “blessing in disguise”.

Hamburg loanee Lasogga was a surprise omission from the Whites squad on Sunday afternoon, as Leeds narrowly secured all three points at home to Garry Monk’s Middlesbrough with a 2-1 win.

Manager Thomas Christiansen confirmed after the match that Lasogga was missing due to illness, but now Italian forward Ekuban has claimed that the German ace is likely to be sidelined for much longer than anticipated.

He said: “There’s a situation where Lasogga is out for a couple of weeks.”

Lasogga has come under huge criticism from sections of the Elland Road faithful of late, after scoring just five goals since joining the Whites from Bundesliga outfit Hamburg.

Ekuban, 23, spoke to press on his return to the side and is likely to be pushing for a starting spot on Wednesday night, with Kemar Roofe also looking to lead the Leeds attack.

Leeds fans reacted with delight to Ekuban’s revelation over Lasogga’s availability, with one fan stating that versatile attacker Roofe “offered so much more” as the Whites’ attacking spearhead.
