The Leeds United striker has dropped down the pecking order after a promising start.
When Leeds United were first linked with Marcus Antonsson in the summer, their fans would have been forgiven for getting very excited indeed. After all, here was a player who had scored 25 goals in 47 matches for Kalmar, including 10 in just 12 league appearances last season.
With that kind of record, it is no surprise Leeds moved for the 25-year-old, and he started his career at Elland Road in promising form, winning the Player of the Month award for his early showings.
The problem is, despite always putting in a shift Antonsson has only scored once in nine Championship matches for Leeds, and his early season struggles in front of goal have seen him dropped in favour of Chris Wood.
The New Zealand international has rewarded Leeds manager Garry Monk’s faith, so what does that mean for his fellow striker?
The simple fact is Antonsson shows too much promise, and is too naturally gifted when it comes to scoring, to be cast aside as a flop. Indeed by the end of the campaign it would be no surprise if he has at least double figures and has played a key role for Leeds in a potential promotion push.
Top clubs need top strikers – and plenty of them – so while Wood is the answer for now, Leeds fans can expect to see much more of Antonsson – and Kemar Roofe for that matter – in the months ahead.
Not everyone can settle as quickly as Pontus Jansson. Let’s face it the super Swede is the exception to the rule. But his countryman could ultimately become just as important as the centre-back in his own way.
