The Wigan Athletic midfielder began the season at one of Leeds United’s closest rivals.
A boyhood Leeds United fan returns to Elland Road with Wigan Athletic on Friday.
But despite his allegiance to Leeds – and the fact he was sold by the Whites’ promotion rivals, Sheffield United, in January – Lee Evans hopes to put a dent in their aspirations.
“Leeds United is a great club and I think most people appreciate they should be in the Premier League,” said Evans, as quoted by the Yorkshire Evening Post on Tuesday. “I have experienced first hand what the atmosphere is like at Elland Road as a fan and player.
“Growing up, I was a big Leeds fan and remember the European nights and some really good times the club had at that time.
“As a player, I have played at Elland Road twice with Wolves. The atmosphere was great on both occasions but I get the feeling it is going to be electric on Good Friday with it being a full house.
“My team-mate at Wigan, Leon Clarke, scored the winner when we won at Leeds with Wolves in 2014 and – whilst I do hope Leeds go up – I wouldn’t mind the same outcome on Good Friday!”
Wigan are in need of the points just as much as Leeds, with only two points separating the Latics from third-bottom Rotherham United heading into their final five fixtures.
Paul Cook’s side do, however, possess the Championship’s worst away record this season, having last won on the road in August.
Evans grew up in Newport, Wales, but began his career at Wolverhampton Wanderers, prior to permanent spells at Sheffield United and Wigan.
The 24-year-old – who described Leeds as being “unbelievable” under Marcelo Bielsa this season – is an international teammate of the Whites forward, Tyler Roberts.
